Springdale Graphic Designer Katie Hughes recounts the inspiration behind A Beer Called Quest, the sixth beer to debut in our 2020 Hazy IPA series.
A Beer Called Quest is based on the song “Can I Kick It” by the American Hip- Hop group, A Tribe Called Quest. For this label, I was inspired by the band’s album artwork depicting a really cool abstract city view drawn in shades of grey, with a pop of color behind the band’s name. Rather than using a cityscape, I wanted to hone in the design to draw inspiration from the colors, and used the Springdale “yeastie boys” to create a whimsical background that mimics the album cover. With such a complicated background, the gradient of red/yellow/green is a perfect pop to make the beer name stand out, while also tying back to the band’s artwork.
I also loved the idea of playing off of the name “A Tribe Called Quest” and when constructing my vision, I really wanted to make this can fun and interactive with a “quest” that people could actively do while enjoying the beer. When I was little I LOVED iSpy or the Where’s Waldo type of games, and I drew on that love to hide a single hop in the sea of yeastie boys. And no, before you say “I found it, that was too easy!” it is not the black and white hop next to the hop names.
This label was so much fun to create, and I’m hoping it’s even more fun to drink!
