In Hazy IPA Series, News

Springdale Director of Marketing Rob Day discusses the musical inspiration behind Spaceman Daydream, the second beer to land in our new Hazy IPA series.

The year is 1972. As we kick back in our lawn chairs, sipping beers quietly in the backyard, our eyes drift to the moonlit sky. We can’t help but imagine the astronauts that took the historical voyage to that moon just a few years prior. We can’t help but get lost in the hypnotic glow of the stars. We can’t help but dream about the experience those spacemen shared.

We take a long, slow sip of beer and just before we slip into an astronomical trance, a bitchin’ guitar riff cuts into our headspace:

“I’m an alligator, I’m a mama-papa coming for you,
I’m the space invader, I’ll be a rock ‘n’ rollin’ bitch for you.”

Bowie’s music floods into our consciousness and fuses with our galactic thoughts, creating the Spaceman Daydream, an 8% ABV double hazy IPA loaded with Galaxy and Enigma hops.

In reality, none of us were alive in 1972, and none of this happened. But this is the story our new hazy IPA is here to tell. This beer is inspired by the acoustic excellence of David Bowie’s Moonage Daydream. This is one of the songs on our Springdale 2020 Spotify Playlist that expresses who we are and inspired our new hazy IPA series.

When we landed on the name, the art flowed easily – after a beer or two. The idea of a spaceman daydream is so instantly visual. You can imagine floating through the wonders of space, weightless and surrounded by silence, just taking it all in. That is what we wanted to capture with this can art.

Now, space is pretty nebulous and hard to capture in a single image, but since this is our Spaceman’s Daydream anything goes. We thought to add some visual structure to the art with a base of space dust in blue stretching across the label and mirrored by a ceiling of purple space dust. What is especially cool about this art is that you can turn it upside down and the environment maintains the same structure, like a spaceman floating out in the great vastness.

This beer is extremely limited so grab one while you can, take a few sips, crank Bowie and “freak out in a spaceman daydream oh yeah.”
